Uzziah (עֻזִּיָּה) means 'my strength is the LORD,' from oz, 'strength,' plus the divine name. He is also called Azariah in 2 Kings, and he is one of the longest-reigning kings of Judah: fifty-two years, beginning at sixteen.
2 Chronicles 26 reads like a success story — towers, cisterns, vineyards, a rebuilt army, engines of war on the walls of Jerusalem, 'and his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong.' Then comes the hinge of the chapter: 'But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction.' He entered the temple to burn incense, a task reserved for the priests, was confronted by Azariah and eighty priests, and became leprous on the spot. He lived in isolation until his death, his son governing in his place.
His reign also dates one of the great prophetic calls: 'In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up' (Isaiah 6:1). A king whose name meant 'my strength is the LORD' had to be removed before Isaiah saw who the actual King was.
