Phoebe Meaning in the Bible

Phoebe is Greek: Phoibē (Φοίβη), from phoibos, 'bright, radiant, pure.' In Greek mythology it was a Titan's name later attached to the moon, which is why Saturn's ninth moon carries it. But the reason it is a Christian name is a single paragraph in the New Testament.

Romans 16:1–2: 'I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: that ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.' Three details are packed in there. She is called diakonos, translated 'servant' in the KJV and the same word rendered 'deacon' when applied to men in 1 Timothy 3. She is from Cenchrea, the eastern port of Corinth. And she is a prostatis — 'succourer,' a word meaning patron or protector, someone with the means to support others, including Paul.

Almost all scholars, across traditions, agree on one further point: Phoebe is the person who carried the Epistle to the Romans from Corinth to Rome. Paul commends her at the point where the letter changes hands. The most theologically dense document in the New Testament travelled several hundred miles in the care of a businesswoman from a port town, who would very likely have been the one to read it aloud and answer the first questions about it.

The name was rare for centuries, revived by the Puritans (who took KJV names literally), and is now firmly back in the US and UK top 500. Two syllables, warm, spelled Phebe in the KJV itself.
