The king behind the name had a remarkable reign. Crowned at sixteen, Uzziah ruled fifty-two years, rebuilt the defences of Jerusalem, dug wells, loved husbandry, and equipped his army with engines 'to shoot arrows and great stones withal' (2 Chronicles 26:15). The summary is generous: 'as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper.'
Then the sentence that turns: 'But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction' (2 Chronicles 26:16).
