Editor’s reflection
A Hebrew name meaning 'my light' — one of the purest scriptural word-names available.
Liora (לִיאוֹרָה) is built from two Hebrew roots — li ('to me' / 'mine') and or ('light'). It literally means 'I have light' or 'light is mine.' Though Liora does not appear as a proper name in the King James Bible, or is one of the most theologically weighted words in Scripture: it is the first thing God speaks into existence in Genesis 1:3 — 'Let there be light: and there was light.'
The name became popular in modern Hebrew after Israel's founding and has spread quickly among English-speaking Christian and Jewish families over the last two decades. Its meaning connects to a whole family of biblical light-themed passages: Psalm 27:1 ('The LORD is my light and my salvation'), Isaiah 60:1 ('Arise, shine; for thy light is come'), and John 8:12 (Jesus as 'the light of the world').
For a daughter, Liora is a name that carries a small daily sermon. Parents often choose it after a period of long darkness — infertility, grief, a difficult season — as a way of declaring that light has come into the household.
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”
Why parents choose Liora today
- •Directly Hebrew, directly meaningful — no translation needed
- •Rare in English-speaking countries, common enough not to feel invented
- •Pairs beautifully with light-themed middle names (Liora Grace, Liora Dawn)
