Elihu Meaning in the Bible

Elihu means "He is my God" in Hebrew. He was the young man who spoke after Job's three older friends had exhausted their arguments — and his speeches are among the most theologically nuanced in the entire book.

Elihu had waited respectfully while the older men spoke: "I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion." But when the three friends failed to answer Job adequately, Elihu's restraint broke: "I also will shew mine opinion... I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me."

Unlike the three friends who insisted suffering always indicates sin, Elihu proposed that suffering can be educational — that God uses pain as a teacher: "He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity." This view is more nuanced and ultimately closer to God's own perspective.

Significantly, when God spoke from the whirlwind, He rebuked Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar — but never mentioned Elihu. Many scholars interpret this silence as tacit approval of Elihu's more balanced theological approach.
