Editor’s reflection
'Forsaken' — a hard name on a mother whose son did what was right.
Azubah (Hebrew עֲזוּבָה) is the passive participle of azab, 'to forsake': 'forsaken' or 'abandoned.' It is the same root Isaiah uses when he promises the restored city, 'Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken' (Isaiah 62:4) — there the word is Azubah, used as a name for the land.
The Azubah who matters is the mother of Jehoshaphat: 'his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi' (1 Kings 22:42). Kings names the queen mother for each reign, and hers is attached to one of Judah's better kings — a man who 'walked in all the ways of Asa his father' and sought the LORD.
A second Azubah is the wife of Caleb in the genealogy of 1 Chronicles 2:18-19, who dies and is succeeded by Ephrath. That is the whole record for her.
What makes the name interesting is the gap between its meaning and its outcome. It reads as a name given in grief or loss, and Isaiah later takes exactly that word and reverses it: the forsaken is renamed Hephzibah, 'my delight is in her.' If you want the promise rather than the lament, that is the pair to read together.
“Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate.”
