What does 2 Timothy 4:7 mean?

2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV) reads: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." It sits in 2 Timothy chapter 4, a piece of Paul's farewell letter from the New Testament, and is most often read as a verse about memorial & funeral. The meaning sharpens when you read the verses immediately around it and notice how 2 Timothy as a whole is arguing its case.

What is the context of 2 Timothy 4:7 in 2 Timothy?

2 Timothy 4:7 belongs to 2 Timothy 4, which fits inside 2 Timothy's wider message as Paul's farewell letter. Before applying the verse, read at least the paragraph it appears in so you can see who is speaking, who is being addressed, and what situation prompted the words.

Is 2 Timothy 4:7 from the Old or New Testament?

2 Timothy 4:7 is from the New Testament — specifically the book of 2 Timothy, chapter 4. That matters because New Testament verses are written after the resurrection and speak directly into the life of the church under the new covenant.
