What does Galatians 5:22-23 mean?

Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV) reads: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance." It sits in Galatians chapter 5, a piece of polemic letter defending justification by faith from the New Testament, and is most often read as a verse about confirmation. The meaning sharpens when you read the verses immediately around it and notice how Galatians as a whole is arguing its case.

What is the context of Galatians 5:22-23 in Galatians?

Galatians 5:22-23 belongs to Galatians 5, which fits inside Galatians's wider message as polemic letter defending justification by faith. Before applying the verse, read at least the paragraph it appears in so you can see who is speaking, who is being addressed, and what situation prompted the words.

Is Galatians 5:22-23 from the Old or New Testament?

Galatians 5:22-23 is from the New Testament — specifically the book of Galatians, chapter 5. That matters because New Testament verses are written after the resurrection and speak directly into the life of the church under the new covenant.
