What does Romans 8:15 mean?

Romans 8:15 (KJV) reads: "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father." It sits in Romans chapter 8, a piece of doctrinal letter on the gospel of grace from the New Testament, and is most often read as a verse about adoption. The meaning sharpens when you read the verses immediately around it and notice how Romans as a whole is arguing its case.

What is the context of Romans 8:15 in Romans?

Romans 8:15 belongs to Romans 8, which fits inside Romans's wider message as doctrinal letter on the gospel of grace. Before applying the verse, read at least the paragraph it appears in so you can see who is speaking, who is being addressed, and what situation prompted the words.

Is Romans 8:15 from the Old or New Testament?

Romans 8:15 is from the New Testament — specifically the book of Romans, chapter 8. That matters because New Testament verses are written after the resurrection and speak directly into the life of the church under the new covenant.
