Why Did Jesus Have to Die on the Cross — Meaning Explained

The necessity of Christ's death is rooted in God's justice and love. God is perfectly holy and just — sin must be punished (Romans 6:23). Yet God is also perfectly loving and desires to save sinners. The cross is where these two attributes meet. Under the Old Testament sacrificial system, animals were offered to temporarily cover sins, but 'it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins' (Hebrews 10:4). A perfect, permanent sacrifice was needed. Jesus, being fully God and fully man, was the only one qualified — He was sinless (2 Corinthians 5:21), so He could bear others' sins without having any of His own. Isaiah 53 prophesied that 'he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities.' On the cross, Jesus took upon Himself the full wrath of God that sinners deserved, crying out 'It is finished' (John 19:30) — the debt was paid in full. Through His death, believers receive forgiveness, righteousness, and eternal life. Without the cross, there is no salvation.
