Zerubbabel was the grandson of King Jehoiachin and thus in the royal line of David. When Cyrus king of Persia issued his decree allowing the Jews to return to Jerusalem, Zerubbabel was appointed governor and led approximately 42,360 exiles back to Judah. His primary task was to rebuild the temple. Despite opposition, intimidation, and years of discouragement, Zerubbabel laid the foundation and, with the prophetic encouragement of Haggai and Zechariah, completed the work. Zechariah saw him as a signet ring — God's chosen instrument. The New Testament traces Jesus' genealogy through Zerubbabel, making him a vital link in the messianic line from David to Christ. Zerubbabel's life teaches that God's purposes are not thwarted by political opposition, and that His chosen leaders accomplish His building work not by might or power but by His Spirit.
