Who Was Zechariah the Prophet — Meaning Explained

Zechariah was a prophet of profound vision and poetic beauty whose ministry spanned the crucial period when the Jewish exiles returned from Babylon to rebuild the temple. He was the son of Berechiah and the grandson of Iddo, a priestly family that had returned with Zerubbabel. His prophetic ministry began in the second year of Darius (520 BC), approximately two months after Haggai began preaching. The two prophets worked in tandem — Haggai with blunt pragmatism, Zechariah with apocalyptic visions — to motivate the people to complete the temple. Zechariah's book is the longest of the Minor Prophets and one of the most difficult. It contains eight night visions in chapters 1-6, including the man among the myrtle trees, the four horns and four craftsmen, the flying scroll, the woman in the basket, and the four chariots. The most famous vision is that of Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord in filthy garments, with Satan accusing him. The Lord rebuked Satan, removed the filthy garments, and clothed Joshua in rich apparel — a powerful picture of justification. The crowning vision of chapters 9-14 contains some of the Old Testament's most explicit messianic prophecies. Zechariah predicted the King riding on a donkey — fulfilled in Jesus' triumphal entry. He foretold the thirty pieces of silver thrown to the potter — fulfilled in Judas' betrayal. He described the piercing of the Messiah — fulfilled at the crucifixion. He envisioned the day when living waters would flow from Jerusalem, when the Lord would be king over all the earth, and when every surviving nation would go up to worship the King. Zechariah's name means 'the LORD remembers,' and his message assured the discouraged returnees that God had not forgotten His covenant promises. Though the restored temple seemed paltry compared to Solomon's, God declared through Zechariah: 'The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former.' This was fulfilled not in the building's architecture but in the Messiah's presence there. Zechariah's visions have shaped Christian understanding of Christ's first and second comings, and his apocalyptic imagery influenced the Book of Revelation. His ministry demonstrates that God's prophetic word sustains His people through discouragement, that present obedience prepares for future glory, and that every detail of Christ's life was foreknown and foretold.
