The Biblical Context

Zebedee was a man of some means in Galilee, owning a fishing business on the shores of the Lake of Gennesaret. He is primarily known as the father of James and John, two of Jesus' most prominent disciples. The initial call of his sons is recorded in Matthew 4:21-22, which states that Jesus 'saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.' This moment highlights Zebedee's silent sacrifice; he allowed his sons to depart from the family business to follow the Messiah, though he himself remained with his hired servants. Zebedee's wife, Salome, is also mentioned in the Gospels as one of the women who followed Jesus and ministered to Him. Mark 1:20 emphasizes that when James and John were called, they left their father 'in the ship with the hired servants,' suggesting that Zebedee operated a significant commercial enterprise. Though Zebedee is never recorded as speaking or becoming a formal apostle himself, his legacy lives on through the 'Sons of Zebedee,' or 'Boanerges' (Sons of Thunder). His willingness to relinquish his sons for the sake of the Kingdom of God provides a subtle but profound example of parental cooperation with the divine calling. His sons would go on to be part of Jesus' inner circle, witnessing the Transfiguration and the agony in Gethsemane.
