Who Was Solomon in the Bible — Meaning Explained

When God offered Solomon anything he wanted, he asked for wisdom: 'Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad' (1 Kings 3:9). God was pleased and gave him unparalleled wisdom plus wealth and honor (3:12-13). His wisdom was legendary — he composed 3,000 proverbs and 1,005 songs (4:32), judged impossible cases (3:16-28), and rulers came from across the world to hear him, including the Queen of Sheba (10:1). Solomon built the temple — Israel's crowning achievement. At its dedication, 'the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD' (8:11). He prayed one of Scripture's greatest prayers (8:22-53). God warned him twice to remain faithful (9:6-7, 11:11). But 'King Solomon loved many strange women' (11:1) — 700 wives and 300 concubines — 'and his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God' (11:4).
