The Biblical Context

Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron, is best known for his decisive action recorded in Numbers 25. While Israel camped at Shittim, the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab and to bow down to their gods, especially Baal-peor. The Lord's anger burned hot, and a plague broke out among the people. In the midst of weeping at the door of the tabernacle, an Israelite man named Zimri brazenly brought a Midianite woman, Cozbi, into his tent in full view of Moses and the congregation. Phinehas rose up, took a javelin in his hand, followed them into the tent, and thrust them both through. 'So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.' Twenty-four thousand had already died. The Lord declared, 'Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them.' God gave him 'my covenant of peace' and 'the covenant of an everlasting priesthood' because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for Israel. Phinehas later appears as a faithful leader. He accompanied the army that punished Midian (Numbers 31), and he led the delegation that confronted the eastern tribes about their altar by the Jordan, accepting their explanation and averting civil war (Joshua 22). Psalm 106:30-31 commemorates his act: 'Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed. And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.' Phinehas embodies holy zeal — not blind violence, but a passionate commitment to God's holiness when sin openly defied the Lord. His story sobers us about taking sin lightly while reminding us that God honors those who honor Him.
