The Biblical Context

Keturah is mentioned briefly in Genesis 25:1-4 and 1 Chronicles 1:32-33 as Abraham's wife after Sarah died. The text says Abraham 'took a wife, and her name was Keturah.' Some Jewish traditions identify Keturah as Hagar, suggesting Abraham remarried his former concubine after Sarah's death. But the biblical text treats her as a distinct person. Keturah bore Abraham six sons: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Abraham gave gifts to these sons during his lifetime, but he sent them away from Isaac 'eastward, unto the east country.' This was similar to how he had dealt with Ishmael, ensuring that Isaac remained the undisputed heir. The descendants of Keturah's sons became various Arabian tribes. The Midianites, in particular, played significant roles in later biblical history. Moses fled to Midian and married Zipporah, daughter of Jethro the priest of Midian. The Midianites later oppressed Israel during the time of Gideon. Keturah's story is brief but significant. It demonstrates that Abraham's covenant with God was specifically through Isaac, not through any of his other sons. The sons of Keturah, like Ishmael, were blessed and became nations, but they did not inherit the Abrahamic promises of land, seed, and blessing that would culminate in Christ. Keturah also reminds us that Abraham's life continued after the great events of Isaac's birth and the binding. He lived 38 more years after Sarah's death, remarried, and had a large family. But the narrative keeps Isaac central, showing that God's purposes often focus on one line even while blessing many.
