The Biblical Context
John, son of Zebedee and brother of James, was a Galilean fisherman called by Jesus (Matthew 4:21). He is believed to be 'the disciple whom Jesus loved' (John 13:23), part of the intimate trio present at the transfiguration, Jairus's daughter's raising, and Gethsemane. At the cross, Jesus entrusted His mother Mary to John's care (John 19:26-27). John outran Peter to the empty tomb (John 20:4). After Pentecost, he partnered with Peter in early church leadership (Acts 3-4). Jesus nicknamed John and James 'Boanerges' — 'sons of thunder' (Mark 3:17) — perhaps for their fiery temperament (Luke 9:54). Yet John became the apostle of love, writing, 'God is love' (1 John 4:8) and 'Beloved, let us love one another' (1 John 4:7). His Gospel uniquely emphasizes Jesus' deity (John 1:1, 20:28). Exiled to Patmos under Roman persecution, he received the Revelation (Revelation 1:9). Tradition says he was the only apostle to die of natural causes, living to old age in Ephesus.
