Who Was Job in the Bible — Meaning Explained

The Book of Job tells the story of a blameless man whom God described as one who 'feared God, and eschewed evil' (Job 1:1). God allowed Satan to test Job by taking his wealth, his children, and his health. Job's wife told him to curse God and die; his three friends argued his suffering must be punishment for sin. Through 42 chapters of intense dialogue, Job maintained his integrity while questioning God's purpose. When God finally spoke from the whirlwind (Job 38-41), He revealed His sovereign power over creation without fully explaining Job's suffering. Job responded, 'I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee' (Job 42:5). God restored Job's fortunes twofold. The book addresses the mystery of innocent suffering and teaches that God is sovereign even when we don't understand His ways.
