Who Was Jehoiada the Priest in the Bible — Meaning Explained

Jehoiada the priest was one of the most courageous and influential figures in Judah's history, though he is often overshadowed by the kings he served. When Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, seized the throne of Judah after her son Ahaziah's death, she murdered all the royal seed — or so she thought. Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram and sister of Ahaziah, rescued the infant Joash (also called Jehoash), the youngest son of Ahaziah, from the massacre. She hid him and his nurse in the bedchamber. Joash remained hidden in the house of the Lord for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land. During those six years, Jehoiada protected the young heir. In the seventh year, Jehoiada made a bold move. He sent for the captains of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, brought them into the house of the Lord, and made a covenant with them. He showed them the king's son and commanded them to protect the young prince. The guards were stationed around the temple, armed, and Jehoiada brought Joash out, put the crown on his head, gave him the testimony, and anointed him king. The people clapped their hands and cried, 'God save the king!' When Athaliah heard the noise, she came to the temple and saw the king standing by a pillar with the princes and trumpeters. She tore her clothes and cried, 'Treason! Treason!' Jehoiada commanded the captains to take her out of the temple and execute her, which they did. With Athaliah dead, Joash was established as king at seven years old. Jehoiada then led a covenant renewal: the people destroyed the house of Baal, broke his altars and images, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal. Jehoiada 'set the overseers of the house of the LORD' and restored the proper worship and offerings. The Bible records that Joash 'did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.' Jehoiada lived to be a hundred and thirty years old, and when he died, he was buried with the kings in the city of David because he had done good in Israel, both toward God and toward His house. Jehoiada's story demonstrates that one faithful priest can preserve a kingdom, restore true worship, and shape a generation. But his influence also warns that godly mentorship must be internalized: after his death, Joash abandoned the faith and even ordered the stoning of Zechariah, Jehoiada's son.
