Jabez appears briefly in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, in the middle of a long genealogy. His story interrupts the list of names with a remarkable note: 'And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.' The name Jabez sounds like the Hebrew word for 'pain' or 'sorrow.' His mother gave him this name because of the anguish of his birth. But Jabez did not allow his name to define his destiny.
