What "Who Was Isaiah the Prophet?" Actually Means
Isaiah ministered in Judah for approximately 60 years (740-680 BC) during the reigns of four kings. His dramatic call came through a vision of God's holiness in the temple (Isaiah 6), where he saw the Lord 'high and lifted up' and responded: 'Here am I; send me.' His book divides into two sections: chapters 1-39 (judgment) and 40-66 (comfort and hope). Isaiah contains the most extensive messianic prophecies: the virgin birth (7:14), the child who is 'Mighty God, Everlasting Father' (9:6), the Suffering Servant (52:13-53:12), and the coming kingdom of peace (11:1-9). The Suffering Servant passage (Isaiah 53) reads like an eyewitness account of Christ's crucifixion written 700 years beforehand. Isaiah is quoted in the New Testament more than any other prophet.
