Hushai the Archite was one of David's most trusted friends and one of the shrewdest operators in biblical narrative. When David fled Jerusalem during Absalom's rebellion, Hushai met him with his coat rent and earth upon his head — the signs of deep grief. David asked him to return to Jerusalem and pretend to serve Absalom while actually working to defeat Ahithophel's counsel. 'And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time.' Ahithophel had advised Absalom to pursue David immediately with twelve thousand men. Hushai argued that David and his men were fierce warriors who would not be easily defeated, and that the news of a defeat would demoralize Absalom's supporters.
