Heman the Ezrahite was a grandson of the prophet Samuel through Joel (1 Chronicles 6:33). David appointed him, along with Asaph and Ethan (Jeduthun), as one of the three chief musicians 'over the service of song in the house of the LORD' (1 Chronicles 6:31). 1 Chronicles 25 describes how David organized the temple musicians into twenty-four courses, and Heman's fourteen sons and three daughters were among them. He is called 'the king's seer in the words of God, to lift up the horn' (1 Chronicles 25:5), indicating both prophetic gifting and musical leadership. Heman wrote Psalm 88, perhaps the darkest psalm in the entire Psalter. It is a relentless lament: 'O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee: let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry; For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.' Unlike most laments, Psalm 88 does not end with resolution or praise — it closes with 'Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.' Yet even this raw cry is addressed to 'O LORD God of my salvation,' showing that honest grief brought before God is still faith. The fact that this psalm was preserved in the canon teaches that God's people may walk through seasons of unrelieved sorrow without losing their place in His congregation. Heman's life shows that those who lead worship are not exempt from suffering and that the Lord uses His servants' afflictions to give voice to others in dark valleys.
