The Biblical Context
Elijah is one of the most dramatic figures in Scripture. He appeared during Israel's darkest spiritual period under King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, who promoted Baal worship. Elijah declared a three-year drought (1 Kings 17:1), was fed by ravens (1 Kings 17:6), raised a widow's son from death (1 Kings 17:22), and confronted 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel in one of Scripture's most dramatic scenes (1 Kings 18). Fire fell from heaven, confirming the LORD as the true God. Yet afterward, Elijah fled in fear from Jezebel and experienced depression (1 Kings 19). God met him with a still small voice. Elijah was taken to heaven without dying (2 Kings 2:11) and appeared with Moses at Jesus' Transfiguration (Matthew 17:3). Malachi prophesied Elijah's return before the Day of the Lord (Malachi 4:5).
