Who Was Eleazar the Priest in the Bible — Meaning Explained

Eleazar, the third son of Aaron and Elisheba, occupies a significant place in Israel's history as the high priest who bridged the wilderness generation and the conquest of Canaan. When Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar's older brothers, were struck dead for offering strange fire before the Lord, Eleazar and his younger brother Ithamar became the priests who served under their father Aaron. After Aaron's death on Mount Hor, Eleazar was clothed with his father's garments and became high priest. He supervised the burning of the red heifer, whose ashes were used for purification from defilement by death. Eleazar accompanied Joshua and the congregation into Canaan. When the Jordan River parted before the ark, Eleazar was present. When the altar was built on Mount Ebal, he stood beside Joshua. He also played a crucial role in distributing the conquered land.
