"Deborah, a prophetess... she judged Israel at that time." — Judges 4:4-5 (KJV)
The Biblical Context
Judges 4:4-5 introduces her: 'Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah... and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.' Israel was oppressed by the Canaanite king Jabin, whose general Sisera had 900 iron chariots (4:3). Deborah summoned Barak and delivered God's command: 'Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men... and I will deliver him into thine hand' (4:6-7). Barak agreed only if Deborah went with him: 'If thou wilt go with me, then I will go' (4:8). She agreed but prophesied, 'The LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman' (4:9). The battle was a decisive victory — 'The LORD discomfited Sisera' (4:15). Sisera fled and was killed by Jael, who drove a tent peg through his temple (4:21). Deborah and Barak's victory song (Judges 5) is one of the oldest pieces of Hebrew poetry. Deborah's leadership shows God raising up women for extraordinary roles when the nation needed direction. She combined prophetic authority, judicial wisdom, and military leadership — a remarkable figure who 'arose a mother in Israel' (5:7).
