What "Who Was Caleb in the Bible?" Actually Means
Caleb's story is one of unwavering faith. When Moses sent twelve spies into Canaan (Numbers 13), ten returned with a fearful report about giants and fortified cities. But Caleb and Joshua said, 'Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it' (Numbers 13:30). Because of their faith, only Caleb and Joshua survived the 40-year wilderness wandering to enter the Promised Land. At 85, Caleb approached Joshua and said, 'I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me… Now therefore give me this mountain' (Joshua 14:11-12). The mountain he requested was Hebron — home of the very giants that had terrified the other spies. Caleb drove out the Anakim and took possession. His life is a testament to wholehearted devotion: Scripture says four times that Caleb 'wholly followed the LORD' (Numbers 14:24, 32:12; Deuteronomy 1:36; Joshua 14:14).
