Caleb was from the tribe of Judah and was one of twelve spies Moses sent to scout Canaan. While ten spies gave a fearful report, Caleb and Joshua urged Israel to trust God and take the land. Because Israel listened to the fearful majority, God condemned that generation to wander 40 years in the wilderness—but promised Caleb and Joshua would enter the land. At age 85, Caleb claimed his inheritance, saying he was still as strong as when Moses sent him. He requested the hill country of Hebron, even though giants lived there, declaring 'the LORD will be with me' (Joshua 14:12). Caleb exemplifies wholehearted faith and perseverance.
