Bartimaeus was the son of Timaeus and is famously known as the blind beggar who sat by the highway side near Jericho. His story is a powerful testament to persistent faith and the compassion of Christ. As Jesus was departing from Jericho with a great multitude, Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. Mark 10:47 records his immediate reaction: 'And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.' Despite the crowd's attempts to silence him, he only cried out 'the more a great deal.' This title, 'Son of David,' was a messianic acknowledgement, showing that Bartimaeus possessed spiritual sight even though his physical eyes were dark. When Jesus called for him, Bartimaeus cast away his garment, rose, and came to the Lord. Jesus asked him, 'What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?' and he responded with the simple request for sight. Mark 10:52 concludes the miracle: 'And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.' His healing was not just physical restoration but a spiritual transformation, as he chose to follow Jesus on the road leading to Jerusalem.
