The Biblical Context

Paul (originally Saul of Tarsus) is one of the most remarkable figures in Christian history. A Pharisee educated under Gamaliel (Acts 22:3), he zealously persecuted the early church, even consenting to Stephen's martyrdom (Acts 7:58-8:1). His dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus — where the risen Christ appeared to him in blinding light (Acts 9:1-6) — transformed him from Christianity's fiercest opponent to its greatest ambassador. Paul undertook three missionary journeys across the Roman Empire, establishing churches in major cities throughout modern-day Turkey, Greece, and beyond. He wrote 13 epistles (Romans through Philemon), which constitute nearly half the New Testament and form the theological backbone of Christian doctrine. His teachings on justification by faith, the body of Christ, spiritual gifts, and the resurrection have shaped Christian theology for two millennia. Paul endured beatings, shipwrecks, imprisonment, and ultimately martyrdom (tradition says beheading in Rome around AD 67), yet he declared, 'I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith' (2 Timothy 4:7).
