Who Was Annas in the Bible — Meaning Explained

Annas was a powerful figure in first-century Judaism, though his role is often overshadowed by his son-in-law Caiaphas. He served as high priest from approximately 6 to 15 AD, appointed by Quirinius, the Roman governor of Syria. Although the Romans removed him from office, his family maintained control of the high priesthood for decades. Five of his sons served as high priest after him, and his son-in-law Caiaphas held the office during Jesus' ministry. This made Annas the patriarch of a high priestly dynasty that dominated Jewish religious politics. Annas appears in the Gospel narratives of Jesus' trial. After Jesus was arrested in Gethsemane, He was first led to Annas, 'for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.' Annas questioned Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. Jesus responded with remarkable composure: 'I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.' One of the officers struck Jesus for this answer, and Jesus rebuked him: 'If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?' After this preliminary examination, Annas sent Jesus bound to Caiaphas. Annas is mentioned again in Acts alongside Caiaphas as part of the authorities who arrested Peter and John. The religious establishment, dominated by Annas's family, opposed the apostles just as it had opposed Jesus. Annas's wealth and power were notorious. He controlled the lucrative trade in temple sacrifices and was widely regarded as corrupt. The 'bazaars of the sons of Annas' were the target of Jesus' temple cleansing. His family's monopoly on the sale of sacrificial animals and the exchange of currency was a source of popular resentment. Annas represents the religious establishment at its worst — a man who used sacred office for personal gain, opposed the Messiah, and persecuted His followers. Yet his power was ultimately temporary, and his name is preserved in Scripture primarily as a foil to the true High Priest, Jesus Christ.
