What "Who Was Ahab in the Bible?" Actually Means
Ahab reigned over the northern kingdom of Israel from about 874 to 853 BC. Scripture's verdict is severe: 'Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD above all that were before him' (1 Kings 16:30). He married Jezebel, built a temple to Baal in Samaria, and gave royal sanction to gross idolatry. During his reign Elijah confronted him repeatedly — calling down a three-and-a-half-year drought, defeating the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, and pronouncing judgment after the murder of Naboth. Ahab humbled himself briefly and God delayed the judgment, but he persisted in defiance. He died in battle against the Syrians when a random arrow pierced his armor, and dogs licked up his blood just as God had said (1 Kings 22:38). Ahab's life is a warning of where compromise with evil ultimately leads.
