What Does the Bible Mean by 'the World' — Meaning Explained

The word 'world' in the Bible carries multiple meanings, and understanding these distinctions is crucial for navigating the Christian life with wisdom and faithfulness. The Greek kosmos and the Hebrew olam/tevah each have a range of meanings that context must determine. First, 'the world' can mean the created universe — the physical cosmos that God made and declared good. John 1:10 states, 'He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.' Here the world is the material creation that came into existence through the Word. The psalmist declared, 'The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.' This world belongs to God, reflects His glory, and will one day be redeemed and renewed. Second, 'the world' can mean the human race — all people who have ever lived. John 3:16 uses the word this way: 'For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.' God's love extends to every human being without exception. Christ died for the sins of the whole world, not for a select few. Third, and most theologically significant, 'the world' can mean the fallen human system — the organized rebellion against God that encompasses Satan's dominion, sinful society's values, and the self-centered desires of the unredeemed heart. This is 'the world' that Christians are commanded not to love: 'Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.' John explains what he means: 'For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.' This world system is characterized by three seductive desires: sensual pleasure (lust of the flesh), material acquisition (lust of the eyes), and self-glory (pride of life). These were the same three temptations Satan offered Jesus in the wilderness, and they remain the world's primary means of luring believers away from devotion to God. The world in this sense is under the control of the evil one. 'We know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.' Satan is 'the prince of this world' who offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. The world hates Christ and His followers because it hates the Father. 'If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.' Christians are called to be 'in the world' but not 'of the world.' We must live in society, work in the marketplace, raise families, and participate in culture without adopting the world's values, priorities, and methods. We are to transform the world by the gospel, not conform to the world by compromise. 'Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.' The world's glory is fleeting. 'The world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.' Every worldly pleasure, possession, and praise will dissolve like mist in the sun. Only what is done for Christ will survive the fire of judgment and enter the joy of the eternal kingdom. The Christian who understands the world is neither naively optimistic nor cynically withdrawn. He recognizes the beauty of God's creation, the value of every human soul, and the danger of the world's seductive system. He loves the world as God loves it — enough to redeem it — while hating the world as God hates it — enough to judge its rebellion. And he lives in the confident hope that one day 'the kingdoms of this world' will become 'the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ.'
