The people journeyed east to the plain of Shinar and said, 'Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.' Their motive was pride and self-sufficiency — they wanted to make a name for themselves rather than trust in God. The LORD came down, saw the city and the tower, and confused their language so they could not understand one another. The project halted, and the people scattered over the face of the earth. The place was called Babel, meaning 'confusion.' The story explains the origin of languages and nations, and it stands as a perpetual warning: human schemes for self-exaltation will always fail.
