The Biblical Context
God gave Moses detailed instructions on Mount Sinai for building the Tabernacle (Exodus 25-40). This portable structure served as the center of Israelite worship for nearly 500 years before Solomon built the permanent Temple. The Tabernacle had three main areas: the outer court (containing the bronze altar and laver), the Holy Place (with the golden lampstand, table of showbread, and altar of incense), and the Most Holy Place or Holy of Holies (housing the Ark of the Covenant). Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement. Every detail of the Tabernacle pointed to Christ: the altar foreshadowed His sacrifice, the lampstand His role as Light of the World, the bread His status as Bread of Life. The veil separating the Holy of Holies was torn at Christ's crucifixion, symbolizing direct access to God through Jesus. John 1:14 says the Word 'dwelt' (literally 'tabernacled') among us.
