The star of Bethlehem appears only in Matthew's Gospel. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, 'wise men from the east' came to Jerusalem asking, 'Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.' Herod and Jerusalem were troubled. The chief priests confirmed the prophecy that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. The star went before the wise men 'till it came and stood over where the young child was.' They rejoiced with exceeding great joy, entered the house, and worshiped Him, presenting gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
