The term 'second death' appears four times in the Book of Revelation and refers to the ultimate consequence of rejecting God — not annihilation but eternal, conscious separation from God's presence and blessing. The first death is physical death, which all people experience. The second death is spiritual and eternal, the final judgment that follows the resurrection of the unjust. Revelation 20:14-15 explicitly identifies the second death with the lake of fire: 'And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.' The second death stands in contrast to eternal life, which believers receive through faith in Christ. Jesus promised that those who overcome will not be hurt by the second death, and Revelation declares that 'blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power.' The second death is not merely punishment but the logical outcome of persistently rejecting God's mercy and grace. Those who enter it have ultimately chosen separation from God, having resisted His offer of salvation throughout their lives.
