What "What Is the Role of Elders in the Bible?" Actually Means
The New Testament uses three terms interchangeably for church leaders: elder (presbuteros), overseer/bishop (episkopos), and pastor/shepherd (poimen). Elders are responsible for teaching sound doctrine (Titus 1:9), shepherding the flock (1 Peter 5:2-3), praying for the sick (James 5:14), and governing the church (1 Timothy 5:17). Qualifications in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 include being above reproach, able to teach, temperate, hospitable, and managing their own household well. Elders serve as spiritual examples and will give an account to God for the souls entrusted to their care (Hebrews 13:17).
