What Is the Priesthood of All Believers — Meaning Explained

The priesthood of all believers is a foundational doctrine of the Reformation, though rooted in the New Testament itself. It teaches that because of Christ's priestly work, every believer has direct access to God and can minister spiritually to others without needing human priests as mediators. The doctrine is based on several key passages. First Peter 2:5, 9 declares that believers are 'a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ' and 'a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.' The Book of Revelation says that Christ 'hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father.' This was revolutionary. In the Old Testament, only the tribe of Levi could serve as priests. Only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place, and only once a year. The ordinary Israelite's access to God was mediated through the Levitical system. But Christ's death changed everything. The veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom, symbolizing that the barrier between God and humanity was removed. 'Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.' Every believer can now approach God's throne directly in prayer. Every believer can offer spiritual sacrifices — praise, good works, and evangelism. Every believer can read and interpret Scripture under the Spirit's guidance. The priesthood of all believers does not eliminate the need for church leadership. Pastors and teachers are gifts Christ gave to equip the saints for ministry. But it does mean that no human intermediary stands between the believer and God. The Reformers applied this principle powerfully. Luther declared that every Christian is a priest called to serve God in their vocation. William Tyndale insisted that the plowboy should know the Scriptures as well as the theologian. This doctrine democratized the faith and placed responsibility for spiritual life directly on each believer.
