What "What is the New Jerusalem?" Actually Means
In the final chapters of Revelation, John sees a vision of the New Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven, 'prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.' The city is described with extraordinary imagery: walls of jasper, gates of pearl, streets of gold, and foundations of precious stones. It measures roughly 1,400 miles in each dimension. Most striking is what it lacks: no temple (because God and the Lamb are its temple), no sun or moon (God's glory provides light), no death, sorrow, or pain. The river of life flows through it and the tree of life grows there, restoring what was lost in Eden. It represents the ultimate fulfillment of God's plan to dwell with humanity.
