What Is the Kingdom of God — Meaning Explained

The kingdom of God is the central theme of Jesus' preaching. From His first sermon — 'The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel' — to His final words before the ascension, Jesus spoke of the kingdom. It is not merely a place but the reign of God. In one sense, God has always been King; His kingdom is universal and eternal. In another sense, the kingdom 'came near' in the person and work of Jesus — the King was present. In yet another sense, the kingdom will be fully consummated when Christ returns to establish His visible reign on earth. The kingdom enters the human heart when a sinner is born again and submits to Christ's lordship. It grows like a mustard seed and works like leaven. Its citizens are the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, and the pure in heart. The kingdom is not of this world — it does not advance by political power or military force but by the Word, the Spirit, and the testimony of transformed lives. To seek the kingdom first is to make God's rule the priority of every decision, relationship, and ambition.
