The Biblical Context

The four horsemen appear as the first four seals of the Lamb are opened in Revelation 6:1-8, each rider summoned by one of the four living creatures surrounding the throne of God. Together they form a terrifying sequence of escalating divine judgment upon a rebellious world. The first horseman rides a white horse: 'And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer,' representing conquest and the rise of military and political power. The second rides a red horse, and 'power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another' — this is war in its most savage expression. The third horseman appears on a black horse, holding balances, and a voice declares scarcity of food at inflated prices — famine. The fourth and most dreadful is the pale horse: 'And his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.' Similar imagery appears in Zechariah 6:1-8, where four chariots with horses of different colors represent divine judgments going forth upon the earth. Christ Himself foretold these signs in Matthew 24:6-7: 'And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars...For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.' The four horsemen declare that history is not random — it moves under the sovereign hand of the Lamb who holds the seals.
