The Biblical Context
The Ark of the Covenant was the most sacred object in Israelite worship. Built according to God's specifications (Exodus 25:10-22), it was a chest of acacia wood overlaid with pure gold, topped by a 'mercy seat' with two golden cherubim. Inside were the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron's rod that budded, and a golden pot of manna. The Ark resided in the Holy of Holies — first in the Tabernacle, then in Solomon's Temple. It represented God's throne on earth, the place where His glory (the Shekinah) visibly dwelt. The Ark played a central role in Israel's history: it led them across the Jordan, around Jericho's walls, and into battle. It was captured by the Philistines (who returned it after plagues), and David brought it to Jerusalem with great celebration. The Ark disappeared from history before or during the Babylonian destruction of the Temple in 586 BC. Its ultimate fate remains one of Scripture's great mysteries.
