Who Are the 144,000 in Revelation — Meaning Explained

The 144,000 appear twice in the book of Revelation and have been the subject of much theological discussion throughout church history. Their first appearance is in Revelation 7:4: 'And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.' John then lists twelve thousand from each of twelve tribes. The seal placed upon them represents divine protection and ownership — they belong to God and are preserved through the terrors of the tribulation for the purposes He has appointed. Their second appearance is in Revelation 14:1-5, where they stand with the Lamb on Mount Zion, described as those who 'were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.' The number twelve thousand from twelve tribes — twelve being the number of covenant completion — suggests a completeness and representativeness in God's purposes for Israel. Paul speaks of Israel's future in Romans 11:25-26, declaring that 'blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved.' Whether understood literally or symbolically, the 144,000 declare the same glorious truth: God has not forgotten His covenant with Israel, and He will bring a great multitude through every tribulation to stand spotless before His throne.
