What Is Biblical Stewardship — Meaning Explained

Biblical stewardship begins with the recognition that everything belongs to God. Psalm 24:1 declares, 'The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.' We are not owners; we are stewards entrusted with God's possessions to manage on His behalf. The first stewardship is creation itself. God placed Adam in the garden 'to dress it and to keep it' (Genesis 2:15) and commanded humanity to have dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:28). This is not exploitation but cultivation — caring for what God has made. Stewardship extends to our time. Ephesians 5:15-16 urges, 'See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.' Psalm 90:12 prays, 'So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.' Time wasted cannot be reclaimed. Stewardship governs our talents. The parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) makes clear that the master expects increase from what he entrusts. The servants who multiplied their talents heard, 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant... enter thou into the joy of thy lord.' The one who buried his was condemned as 'wicked and slothful.' Stewardship of treasure is a major biblical theme. 1 Corinthians 4:2 says, 'Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.' We are to give generously, save wisely, spend modestly, and avoid debt and greed. The believer also stewards the mysteries of God (1 Corinthians 4:1) — the gospel, spiritual gifts, ministry opportunities. One day every steward will give an account (Romans 14:12). Faithful stewardship is not legalism but love, recognizing that God has trusted us and that all we have is meant to magnify Him.
