What Is Prophecy in the Bible — Meaning Explained

Prophecy in the Bible is far broader than merely predicting the future. The Hebrew word nabi and the Greek prophetes mean 'one who speaks on behalf of another' — a prophet is God's spokesman, delivering His message with His authority. Prophecy includes forthtelling (declaring God's truth to the present generation) as well as foretelling (predicting future events). The Old Testament prophets were called directly by God, authenticated by miracles, and delivered messages that covered every area of life: religious, social, political, and moral. Their messages consistently called Israel back to covenant faithfulness, warned of judgment for disobedience, and promised future restoration. The ultimate test of a true prophet was whether his predictions came to pass and whether he led people to worship the true God alone. Approximately one-fourth of the Bible was prophetic at the time it was written, and prophecy constitutes a major portion of Scripture. The center of all biblical prophecy is Jesus Christ. Peter declared that 'the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.' From Genesis 3:15 (the first Messianic prophecy) to Malachi, the prophets progressively revealed the coming Messiah. In the New Testament, prophecy continues as a spiritual gift for edification, exhortation, and comfort of the church. The ultimate purpose of prophecy is not to satisfy curiosity about the future but to produce reverence for God, repentance from sin, and hope in His promises.
