What Is Pneumatology — Meaning Explained

Pneumatology comes from the Greek pneuma, meaning 'spirit' or 'wind,' and logos, meaning 'study of.' It is the doctrine of the Holy Spirit — the third person of the Trinity. As a person, the Holy Spirit possesses intellect (He 'searcheth all things'), emotions (He can be grieved), and will (He distributes gifts as He wills). He is not an impersonal force but a divine person who can be lied to, resisted, and blasphemed. The Holy Spirit's work in salvation is comprehensive. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8). He regenerates the sinner, giving new spiritual life (Titus 3:5). He indwells every believer (1 Corinthians 6:19), seals them for the day of redemption (Ephesians 1:13-14), and guarantees their inheritance. He baptizes believers into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13), uniting them with other believers. The Spirit's work in sanctification is equally vital. He produces the fruit of the Spirit in believers' lives — love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance (Galatians 5:22-23). He empowers believers for witness and service (Acts 1:8), illuminates the understanding of Scripture (1 Corinthians 2:12-14), and intercedes for believers according to God's will (Romans 8:26-27). In the church, the Spirit bestows spiritual gifts for the edification of the body (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). These gifts are given for service, not status, and must be exercised in love. Pneumatology also addresses the Spirit's role in inspiration, guiding the human authors of Scripture to write God's Word (2 Peter 1:21). A proper understanding of pneumatology guards against two extremes: neglecting the Spirit's work (quenching) and overemphasizing subjective experiences (fanaticism). The Spirit always glorifies Christ and leads believers into truth.
