The Biblical Context

Mercy is one of the most beautiful attributes of God and one of the most important virtues He requires of His people. The Hebrew word hesed, often translated 'lovingkindness' or 'mercy,' describes God's covenant loyalty and steadfast love that persists despite human unfaithfulness. The Greek eleos emphasizes compassion for those in need. God's mercy is not passive pity but active intervention. He 'is rich in mercy' toward those dead in trespasses and sins, making them alive together with Christ. ThePsalms repeatedly celebrate divine mercy: 'His mercy is everlasting,' 'The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.' God's mercy is the basis for every spiritual blessing. If He gave us what we deserve, none would survive. If He gave us what we earn, none would be saved. But 'according to his mercy he saved us.' Mercy is closely related to but distinct from grace. Mercy is God's kindness toward those in misery and sin — withholding the punishment we deserve. Grace is His kindness toward the undeserving — giving us blessings we do not deserve. Together, mercy and grace form the twin pillars of the gospel. Jesus made mercy central to His teaching. The Beatitudes declare, 'Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.' He told the parable of the unmerciful servant to show that those who have received mercy must extend it to others. When the Pharisees criticized Him for eating with sinners, Jesus quoted Hosea: 'I will have mercy, and not sacrifice.' The parable of the Good Samaritan redefined neighbor-love as active, costly mercy. James warns that judgment without mercy will be shown to those who show no mercy, while 'mercy rejoiceth against judgment.' Believers are to be 'merciful, as [their] Father also is merciful.' Practical mercy includes forgiving those who sin against us, caring for the poor and suffering, showing compassion to the broken, and extending patience to the difficult. Mercy transforms relationships, heals communities, and testifies to the character of the God who first showed mercy to us.
