What Is Meekness in the Bible — Meaning Explained

Meekness is one of the most misunderstood and undervalued virtues in Scripture, often confused with weakness, passivity, or cowardice. In reality, biblical meekness is strength under control — the deliberate choice to yield one's rights, power, and position to God's will rather than asserting them for selfish ends. The Greek word prautes and the Hebrew anavah both convey the idea of gentleness, humility, and submission to God. The most famous statement about meekness is Jesus's beatitude: 'Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.' This promise is astonishing in a world where the aggressive, the powerful, and the self-assertive seem to inherit everything. But Jesus taught that meekness, not might, is the path to true dominion. The meek will inherit the earth because they trust God's timing and God's justice rather than seizing what they want by force. Moses is the classic Old Testament example of meekness. Numbers 12:3 states, 'Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.' This is remarkable because Moses had every reason to be proud. He had spoken with God face to face, performed unmatched miracles, and led millions of people through the wilderness. Yet when his own siblings criticized him, he did not defend himself. He left his vindication to God. Meekness does not mean lacking convictions or failing to act. Moses was fiercely zealous for God's glory and justice. But he did not defend his own reputation or assert his own rights. Jesus is the supreme example of meekness. He declared, 'I am meek and lowly in heart,' and invited the weary to find rest in Him. Yet this meek Man drove the money changers from the temple with a whip, confronted the Pharisees with devastating clarity, and went to the cross with unflinching resolve. His meekness was not weakness — it was absolute strength surrendered to the Father's will. 'He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.' Paul commanded Christians to 'put on... meekness' as part of their new nature in Christ. Meekness is a fruit of the Spirit, not a natural temperament. It must be cultivated through prayer, the study of God's Word, and the experience of God's sovereignty in daily life. The meek person does not demand his rights, does not retaliate when wronged, does not boast of his achievements, and does not seek to dominate others. But the meek person is not a doormat. He speaks truth boldly, confronts sin lovingly, defends the weak courageously, and obeys God regardless of cost. The difference between weakness and meekness is motive and control. The weak person cannot stand up for himself; the meek person chooses not to, trusting God to vindicate him in His time. Meekness produces peace in relationships, patience in trials, and trust in God's providence. It is the opposite of self-assertion, the antidote to anger, and the foundation of true leadership. The meek inherit the earth not because they are passive but because they refuse to seize it by force, and God delights to give His kingdom to those who wait for Him.
