Kindness is one of the most beautiful expressions of Christian character, listed by Paul among the fruit of the Spirit. The Greek word chrestotes describes moral excellence in action — a goodness that is gentle, helpful, and considerate. It is not merely the absence of cruelty but the active presence of benevolence. Kindness looks for opportunities to do good. God's kindness is the fountain from which all human kindness flows. Paul asked the Romans, 'Despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?' God's kindness is not weakness but purposeful mercy designed to draw sinners to Himself. Jesus pointed to God's common grace — the rain falling on the just and unjust, the sun rising on the evil and the good — as evidence of the Father's universal kindness. The supreme demonstration of divine kindness is the cross. Paul wrote that 'when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son.' There is no greater kindness than loving and serving those who hate you. Jesus embodied kindness throughout His ministry. He touched lepers, welcomed children, fed hungry multitudes, healed the sick, and showed compassion to the marginalized. His kindness was not sentimental — He also confronted hypocrisy and warned of judgment — but His default posture toward hurting people was gentle and generous. The parable of the Good Samaritan is Scripture's masterclass in kindness. The Samaritan did not merely feel compassion; he acted on it — bandaging wounds, providing transportation, paying for care, and following up. This active, costly benevolence is what biblical kindness requires. For believers, kindness is not optional niceness but a command. 'Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another.' It extends even to enemies: 'If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink.' Kindness in daily life includes encouraging words, practical help, generous giving, patient listening, forgiving offenses, and advocating for the vulnerable. It transforms relationships, builds community, and bears witness to the God whose very nature is kind. In a harsh and cynical world, simple kindness is a powerful apologetic for the gospel.
